Your Electricity Rate Is Expiring. Now What?

Hi Everyone,

I've been hearing from a number of JohnnyPower readers lately who are asking the same question:

"My lower electricity rate is about to expire. What should I do?"

It's a great question, and the timing is important.

Many of us have enjoyed electricity supply rates well below what Eversource and United Illuminating (UI) are charging today. But the market has changed, and those lower rates are no longer available to new customers.

Right now, my recommendation is simple: If your lower rate is expiring, consider switching back to your utility's standard service.

Here's Where Electricity Rates Stand Today

Electricity Supply

Current Rate

Eversource Standard Service

11.57¢/kWh

United Illuminating (UI) Standard Service

11.94¢/kWh

Third-Party Supplier Offers

Over 13.5¢/kWh

Based on the supplier offers I've reviewed, both utilities currently have lower supply rates than the available third-party alternatives.

Remember, we're comparing only the electricity supply portion of your bill, not delivery charges.

What Should You Do?

1. Already with Eversource or UI for electricity supply? Stay put.

There's no reason to switch to a third-party supplier offering a higher rate.

2. Have a lower rate with a third-party supplier? Keep it!

Enjoy those savings while they last. Just make sure you know when your contract expires and what happens afterward.

3. Is your lower rate expiring? Pay attention!

Find out what your supplier will charge when your current contract ends. If the new rate is higher than your utility's standard service rate, consider switching back.

Don't wait until the last minute. Supplier changes can take time to process.

Don't Give Back Months of Savings

This is the part I really want everyone to understand.

Let's say you spent six months saving $20 per month by switching to a lower electricity rate. That's $120 in savings.

Now imagine your contract expires and you're suddenly paying 5¢ more per kWh than you need to.

For a household using 1,000 kWh per month, that's an additional $50 per month.

In less than three months, you've given back all those savings!

That's why staying on top of your electricity rate is just as important as finding a good one in the first place.

Take 60 Seconds to Check Your Bill

Your electricity bill contains important information that can help you avoid overpaying.

Look for three things:

  • Your supplier: Who is actually supplying your electricity?

  • Your rate: How many cents per kWh are you paying?

  • Your expiration date: When does your current rate end?

Here's an example from my actual Eversource bill.

You'll notice I'm currently paying Direct Energy 10.19¢/kWh, below Eversource's standard service rate of approximately 11.57¢/kWh.

That's great, but my contract expires with my December meter reading. I'll need to make a decision soon, just like many of you.

Look for these same details on your own bill. If your expiration date isn't shown, contact your supplier to confirm it.

New Rates Are Coming January 1st!

One more thing to keep in mind.

Eversource and UI are expected to announce their new standard service electricity rates around November 15th. Those rates will take effect January 1, 2027.

Once they're announced, I'll review the numbers, compare them with available supplier offers, and send you another update.

In the meantime, you can compare current offers yourself on the official Energize CT Rate Board.

The Bottom Line

Sometimes saving money means switching electricity suppliers. Other times, it means knowing when to switch back.

Know your rate. Know when it expires. And don't give back the savings you've worked to earn.

That's what JohnnyPower is all about.
